The Ulum Group account team, led by Vice President Monica Shovlin, used a variety of communication vehicles to educate Lane County residents about the impacts of landfill expansion, to encourage them to reduce waste in their everyday lives, and to offer suggestions on waste reduction, recycling and reuse. The campaign, which ran from August 2002 through September 2003, included print advertising, media relations, public speaking, Web site communications, promotional incentives, special events and partnerships with local businesses and other community organizations. As a result, Lane County Waste Management collected over one ton of used holiday cards for reuse by St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, 325 pledges to reduce waste, and 3,500 requests for removal from direct marketing lists.
